The advertising and public relations world has continually brought physicians names to the public. Ten years ago if a doctor called himself a cosmetic surgeon, the patient knew precisely what that title meant. Currently, doctors in various sub-specialties, such as dermatologists, gynecologists, opthamologists and even dentists, are performing cosmetic surgery procedures. This can utterly confuse prospective patients trying to find the most qualified surgeons. How, wonders Dr. Stanley Taub, a New York City plastic and reconstructive surgeon, “is a prospective patient to know who is a diligent, excellent, caring physician and who is a charlatan?” Taub wants to disseminate information the public can use to select a cosmetic surgeon in a country now brimming with doctors calling themselves “cosmetic surgeons.” “Public law and policy do not necessarily protect us from unreasonable and untrue claims,” declares Taub. “A physician needs to be licensed in medicine which means earning a recognized medical degree–and can hang out a shingle in any specialty he chooses. The state does not control what area of medicine he practices or which type of specialist he says he is unless there are complaints and he is brought before the Office of Professional Medical Conduct. Often, however, by then it is too late.” How do we ascertain a physicians expertise and qualifications before placing ourselves under his or her care? Four basic areas must be investigated–a physicians training, certification, associations and attitude toward his or her patients. “A physician should have and be willing to provide evidence that he or she has trained in the area of their expertise,” Taub states. “For example, patients want to locate a plastic surgeon who trained in plastic surgery, which means a post-surgical residency fellowship in the sub-specialty. Each residency or fellowship program gives a certificate [indicating] the dates of service as well as the hospital or department in which the physician trained.” Most physicians keep certificates and other diplomas framed in their offices. If these are unavailable, at least a curriculum vitae or brochure describing a doctors training should be available and carefully examined by the patient. “If a physician is either unable or unwilling to disclose this information, it becomes a clear issue of medical consumer beware,” Taub warns.

Ct., confidential docket no., Dec. 28, 2000. Doe was sued for personal injuries arising out of a motor vehicle collision. Does automobile insurer retained an attorney to defend Doe and informed the attorney that the accident was “suspicious.” The attorney then began to communicate with attorneys for the insurer about the possibility of fraud by Doe-providing them with photographs, pleadings, and discovery-but did not notify Doe of these activities. The attorney also learned that the insurer was going to sue Doe, but did not inform Doe of the insurers intent. When the insurer later filed suit against Doe, it allegedly failed to serve her with the complaint and deliberately filed for entry of a default judgment when Doe did not respond to the complaint. Doe sued the insurer and the attorney, alleging breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, among other claims. Plaintiff asserted that the insurer did not inform her of her right to independent counsel even though it knew that its suspicions created a conflict of interest between it and plaintiff, Plaintiff also contended that defendants had engaged in the same wrongful conduct before.

To determine how weight loss success due to an RD-led intervention compared with frequent weight monitoring, the researchers examined a weight loss program that included RD-led weight-loss classes and frequent weigh-in visits. They evaluated weight loss on a continuous scale based on attendance of both RD-led weight-loss classes and weigh-in visits that did not include RD interaction. They examined the relative strength of each of these factors on weight-loss success in a population recruited from the surrounding community for a hypocaloric weight-loss study. Eight of the participants for the hypocaloric weight loss intervention had type 1 diabetes mellitus, a condition that makes successful, safe weight loss especially difficult. Therefore, they thought it important to include these subjects in the analysis, and examined whether attendance and weight loss differed from the nondiabetic group. Participants were subjects involved in a larger, yet unpublished clinical weight-loss study. As determined a priori, potential participants in this substudy were the first consecutive 28 subjects enrolled in the larger study. From this group of 28 subjects, two individuals were excluded before analysis. The study subjects were overweight (BMI [calculated as kg/[m.sup.2]] >27.0) men (n= 10) and women (n= 16), some of whom had type 1 diabetes (n=8), recruited to participate in an 11-week weight-loss study at the General Clinical Research Center of the University of Minnesota. At baseline the mean BMI was 33.2 [+ or -] 3.67 and age was 43 [+ or -] 12 years. Subjects with type 1 diabetes had a mean baseline hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) of 7.2% [+ or -] 1.0%. Volunteers interested in weight loss attended an initial screening visit to determine height, weight, and BMI. Dietary intake and physical activity estimates were made by an RD interview and a clinical assessment of the information was used to estimate energy needs. Total energy expenditure was estimated as the calculated basal energy expenditure adjusted for reported activity and dietary intake. The energy prescription was determined as a 750-kcal deficit from estimated total energy expenditure. Subjects then participated in the 11-week weight-loss phase composed of 33 visits, including 11 weekly 1-hour RD-led weight loss classes and 22 semiweekly non-RD-related weigh-in visits. Class attendance and weigh-in compliance were strongly encouraged but not mandatory. Attendance for each class and weigh-in visit was documented. The RDs developed and implemented an 11-week weight management intervention program. The first class included one-on-one instruction with individualized guidelines for the energy-restricted diet, menu plans, and recommendations for increased physical activity levels. The additional 10 weight-loss classes were designed for a small group setting and covered a number of relevant topics related to short-term and long-term weight loss.

One of the distinguishing features of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo in 1994, (1) and its five-year follow-up by a special session of the UN General Assembly in 1999 (ICPD + 5) (2) is that they moved beyond rhetoric to define reproductive health, including sexual health, in the context of primary health care and to provide countries with specific goals, objectives, and targets, in order to provide quality sexual and reproductive health information and services. These reflect an international consensus on what needs to be achieved, requiring a combination of programme initiatives, public health policies, legislation, educational capacity building and community-wide efforts. Until recently, little interest has been expressed by medical educators in integrating sexual and reproductive health in the medical curriculum. Significantly, no international group that is representative of medical educators or the medical profession attended either ICPD in 1994 or the 1999 Special Session of the UN General Assembly, with the exception of the Commonwealth Medical Association.

The appearance of defined, rock-hard ab muscles is possible only if the abs are highly trained and there is very little fat on top of them. “On average, women have more total body fat than men, and proportionally tney nave more subcutaneous fat in their bellies, Gaesser says. Whats more, its easier for men to lose body fat than it is for women, partly due to hormonal differences. “If you put men and women on the same exercise and diet program, men will lose more weight on average,” Gaesser says. Of course, not every man will lose more fat than every woman will. There are exceptions: Some women can achieve a six-pack without tremendous work, and some men have no chance of ever having sleek abs. The bottom line, Gaesser says: Dont get frustrated if you cant achieve that six-pack. It may not be a matter of lacking willpower. It could be just a matter of genetic and gender destiny. Q I have very big calves and cant get them any smaller no matter what I do. Im not even sure if theyre mostly fat or muscle. What exercises should I do to make my calves smaller? A There arent any exercises you can do to shrink the size of your calves (or any other specific area of your body). If you are overweight, you can lose overall body fat by combining cardiovascular exercise and strength training with a sensible nutrition plan. Some of the fat should come off your calves. However, if youre already lean, chances are you simply have muscular calves. “Theres just no way around that,” says Los Angeles trainer Ken Alan, a spokesman for the American Council on Exercise. You may be able to make your legs appear more proportional by building up your guadriceps, hamstrings and gluteals in the weight room. But rather than dislike your large calves, Alan says, “try to think of them as a positive. You have a great genetic advantage for certain athletic activities. Be a sprinter or a volleyball player.”

Bob Denmans company has constructed a lot of fences over the years, but no matter the project or the material used, he has one overriding philosophy: A fence should play the role of a picture frame. “An ugly picture is enhanced by a beautiful picture frame, says Denman, president of Taylor Fence Co. in Colorado Springs. Consumers are sensitive to such aesthetics these days, but not everyone can afford a custom-made fence. Still, theyre demanding fences that are attractive and easy to maintain, and the industry has responded: The U.S. fence market is being fueled by polyvinyl chloride and nonwire ornamental fences, according to a report by Specialists in Business Information. PVC fences dont rot and dont need painting. The new ornamental fences are tubular and coated with a material that doesnt rust and also doesnt need painting, Denman says.

Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg is putting himself in a jar. The Woodbury-based plastic surgeon is not performing feats of prestidigitation. And he doesnt advocate going at yourself with a mirror and scalpel, although he has written a how-to book on plastic surgery: “A Little Nip, A Little Tuck: An Insiders Guide to Cosmetic Enhancement” was published two weeks ago, coinciding with the release of Greenbergs new cosmetic products line, “Cosmetic Surgeon in a Jar,” which launches in July. “A Little Nip, A Little Tuck” was written for anyone considering cosmetic surgery, Greenberg said, with information on how to find a surgeon and what questions to ask, and details on almost every cosmetic procedure available. Theres also step-by-step walk- throughs, from pre- to post-op. Chapter titles reveal both the operations discussed and the books breezy style: “The Quest for Cleavage,” “Bringing Up the Rear” and “The Perfect Profile” are among the highlights. But Greenberg, who has been altering appearances for 10 years, is serious about being taken seriously, especially in the “portion of the book about whos a good candidate for surgery and whos not,” the surgeon said.

The advertising and public relations world has continually brought physicians names to the public. Ten years ago if a doctor called himself a cosmetic surgeon, the patient knew precisely what that title meant. Currently, doctors in various sub-specialties, such as dermatologists, gynecologists, opthamologists and even dentists, are performing cosmetic surgery procedures. This can utterly confuse prospective patients trying to find the most qualified surgeons. How, wonders Dr. Stanley Taub, a New York City plastic and reconstructive surgeon, “is a prospective patient to know who is a diligent, excellent, caring physician and who is a charlatan?” Taub wants to disseminate information the public can use to select a cosmetic surgeon in a country now brimming with doctors calling themselves “cosmetic surgeons.” “Public law and policy do not necessarily protect us from unreasonable and untrue claims,” declares Taub. “A physician needs to be licensed in medicine which means earning a recognized medical degree–and can hang out a shingle in any specialty he chooses. The state does not control what area of medicine he practices or which type of specialist he says he is unless there are complaints and he is brought before the Office of Professional Medical Conduct. Often, however, by then it is too late.” How do we ascertain a physicians expertise and qualifications before placing ourselves under his or her care? Four basic areas must be investigated–a physicians training, certification, associations and attitude toward his or her patients. “A physician should have and be willing to provide evidence that he or she has trained in the area of their expertise,” Taub states. “For example, patients want to locate a plastic surgeon who trained in plastic surgery, which means a post-surgical residency fellowship in the sub-specialty. Each residency or fellowship program gives a certificate [indicating] the dates of service as well as the hospital or department in which the physician trained.” Most physicians keep certificates and other diplomas framed in their offices. If these are unavailable, at least a curriculum vitae or brochure describing a doctors training should be available and carefully examined by the patient. “If a physician is either unable or unwilling to disclose this information, it becomes a clear issue of medical consumer beware,” Taub warns.

Where to find a cosmetic surgeon Can you tell me how to find a reputable cosmetic surgeon who specialises in facial surgery? Is Harley Street in London a good starting point? Harley Street used to be full of some of the worlds best doctors, but recently it has attracted more than its fair share of scoundrels - anyone can rent a room in Harley Street and the address is no guarantee of good medical care. Go via the British Association of Aesthetic Cosmetic Surgeons at the Royal College of Surgeons, 35-43 Lincolns Inn Fields, London WC2A 3PN. Send them an A5 SAE and ask for a list of approved members and their information pack. All their members are qualified surgeons and, as a rule, I would only use their members or doctors of a similar stature (those with an NHS consultant post in cosmetic surgery). Dont pay anything up front - most doctors only send their bills in after they have done the operation. Can you suggest a remedy for recurrent mouth ulcers? I am 43 and have suffered from ulcers on and off for 20 years - they tend to come out in crops and the pain is so bad that I cant eat.

WHAT IS CORPORATE EDUCATION?This report discusses the extensive education and training programs established and run by corporations and other organizations, largely profitmaking enterprises whose primary purpose is something other than education, in the context of traditional higher education. As used in this report, “corporate education” is education offered by a business or industry for its own employees.HOW EXTENSIVE IS CORPORATE EDUCATION?Corporate education is an extensive, multifaceted endeavor, costing billions of dollars, educating millions of people, and absorbing many working hours annually.It is estimated, for example, that approximately $30 billion to $50 billion is spent on formal employee education and $180 billion on informal, on-the-job, education. Employees in companies with 500 or more employees–4.4 million people–can expect to receive frequent instruction paid for and provided by their employers.IS CORPORATE EDUCATION A THREAT TO HIGHER EDUCATION?As colleges and universities strive to respond to the needs of nontraditional students, they often find that corporate educators have preceded them. Corporations, with the assistance of the American Council on Education and the New York Board of Regents, have had their courses evaluated, frequently leading to the granting of credit for corporate coursework by colleges and universities.Courses offered by corporations range from remedial to postgraduate level management and technical courses. Corporations have even founded their own colleges, known as “corporate colleges.” These educational efforts potentially could threaten the health, and devalue the worth of, higher education, but in fact, corporate education is compatible with–indeed complements–traditional higher education. Higher education in the United States has been responsive to the needs of the workplace since the beginning of the federal period. The prevailing dialogue in higher education has long been the weighing of tradeoffs–practically and philosophically–between general education and what now is called “career education.” The formal recognition of instruction independent of the providers is a multifaceted and complex enterprise on the postsecondary education scene in and of itself. These efforts have accomplished two things. First, the structural conformity of noncollegiate instruction with collegiate instruction (for example, associating credit hours with contact hours) facilitates transfers and students mobility and opens up an array of potential cooperative efforts between businesses and colleges. Second, they have served as a major channel of communication between school and corporation about educational content and methods. This report presents the interaction between corporate education and these recognition processes, a path by which noncollegiate education can wend its way into the most traditional patterns of higher education. Innovations find their way into higher education in five ways, one of which is when external institutions appear on the scene to challenge, titillate, and/or draw attention to significant issues.The emergence of corporate education with its interest in formal recognition offers opportunities and challenges to higher education in the way it teaches, the students it seeks, and the perception of the purposes of education. The growth of corporate education is a stimulus to both internal collegiate debates and public policy decision making.WHAT CAN BE EXPECTED FROM THE PROLIFERATION OF CORPORATE EDUCATION?Many profitable educational ventures have been initiated that were provoked by employers recognition of their responsibility for developing their employees. The American University, for example, using its own faculty, offers an MS in toxicology at Litton Industries, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology cooperates in an education program with IBM and Digital Equipment. An indirect benefit to colleges resulting from an increased awareness of conditions in higher education on the part of business and industry has been the use of modern technology by colleges and universities to educates future employees. And a national discussion on the role of colleges and universities in American society has been stimulated by heightened awareness of shared national needs.

Hair Loss
Hair loss is a normal part of the hair growth cycle. In fact, we typically lose 50 to 150 scalp hairs every day. Baldness (alopecia) results when hair loss occurs at an abnormally high rate; when hair replacement occurs at an abnormally slow rate; or when normal hairs are replaced by thinner, shorter ones. Daniel Taheri, MD, Board Certified Dermatologist has treated many patients with hair loss over the years. Recently, Dr. Taheri shared some valuable insight about the causes and treatments of hair loss, as well as natural solutions. A: Although there are many reasons for hair loss, 95 percent of all cases are due to Androgenetic Alopecia, which is more commonly known as Male or Female Pattern Hair Loss, This genetic condition occurs more frequently in males, affecting approximately 40 million men in the United States.
Easy To Understand Test Empowers Women, Doctors To Predict Female Hair Loss The HairDX test for Female Hair Loss provides women with a score, called the CAG repeat score. A smaller CAG repeat score is associated with a higher risk for significant hair loss (Ludwig grade II or III hair loss) while a larger repeat score is associated with a lower risk for hair loss. To be tested, a woman swabs her mouth (inside cheek) for several seconds and returns the swab to the HairDX lab. The results are delivered confidentially and anonymously via a secure and private Web site. Female Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA) loss has been difficult to diagnose because women dont develop a pattern like men do, they tend to thin diffusely, and there are many causes for thinning. According to JAAPA, the peer-reviewed clinical journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, it is conservatively estimated that by age 50, at least 50% of women will experience diffuse thinning with an emphasis on the top of the scalp.

Children at Oakleigh Gardens School, South Tyneside, had nowhere to swim when their pool closed in April. Catherine Matheson [*] NAVAJO FAMILIES WHO HAVE CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES In the United States, many have come to believe that families and family involvement are the most important factors in supporting children with disabilities. Families exist within an ecocultural environment that is complex and powerful, and it is within the family context that development in all its forms begins and is nurtured. We cannot understand what family involvement means without understanding the culture of families and the informal systems that families use to adapt and operate. In this chapter, the example of Navajo families with children with disabilities underscores and shows in high relief the heavy reliance on cultural support for families that is part of any family system. As early-intervention and family support programs continue to grow in the United States, we need to understand and sustain those benefits of indigenous systems that provide support and relief to families even as we seek to engage families in the use of supports that may be offered by private and public agencies. Two complementary systems operate to fulfill the needs of Navajo and other American families who have children with disabilities: one is the indigenous adaptive system and the other is the public health system that has been established nationally in the United States with local options. One example is the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 1997), parts B and C, providing early intervention, preschool, and school-age services. The indigenous system was in existence long before the IDEA, but has not been recognized as such. Both systems attempt to increase the well-being of families, but because all adaptive systems have a cost, neither system is totally benign. Each system extracts some payment for the benefits it provides. When discussing costs, our intent is not so much to point out financial costs, which are often involved, but to show that costs to families can be more subtle, such as the erosion of family responsibility and satisfaction with the efforts the family makes on behalf of the child with a disability. Thus, in the Navajo sample, families identified medical disabilities and sought help for medical problems from professionals but were sometimes unable to resolve their anxiety until they involved spiritual services or indigenous healing practices. Conversely, Navajo families did not identify learning disorders in the preschool age group that we interviewed. Learning and language disabilities were primarily identified by professionals and schools, who in turn sometimes found families apprehensive and reluctant to adopt an active role in early-intervention efforts that they had not sought themselves.
